'The Omen' (2006) Movie Review

I really enjoyed watching the first Omen movie. I don't know why they made a remake, because it was too much like the original. There were some slight variations, but mostly, it just wasn't as good. The cinematography was fine, but the stunts were unremarkable and looked too easy and clumsily done. For instance, during the decapitation scene, you see a small pool of blood under the man before he is beheaded! And rather than having the lead actress pushed out of the hospital window, she is given a lethal dose of air in her IV and kept quiet while it does its work. Alright, fine. And in this movie, they fully embraced the horror genre, using grotesque dreams and shameless jump scares. It loses a bit of the essence of the original movie, that this could be a possibly true scenario. Do we live in a CGI world? No, so no, this doesn't work well.

The child in this movie does not look five years old, which is what he is supposed to be. He looks more like a small nine, and it seems difficult for him to pull off this role, let alone seem interested in playing it to start with. He has this dull stare throughout most of the film. I'm sure that's not really his fault, but the kid in the original film seemed way more interesting! He did such a good job, in fact, that he was nominated for a Golden Globe award! So I think this child was definitely miscast. Julia Styles was perfect as the mother. She really had my sympathy when she found Damien annoying. He was playing this violent video game, and she was like, "Will you please take him away?" to the nanny. And the dad said, "He's playing quietly." No he wasn't! He was killing and killing in that video game, and it grates on the nerves, for real! I didn't like the guy who they chose to play the father at all. He didn't seem nearly old enough to be an ambassador. They had to completely rework the storyline around to allow this, having a guy killed and somehow, he is deemed more competent than all these other people? What? Why? It's a plot hole and it's never filled by him showing any special expertise in the job.

I did not enjoy this movie very much, I don't know why they remade it, when the first one is so great!
